JEFF KOONS: CON MAN OR NAUGHTY GENIUS?
Written by Countess du Ruel

I know where I stand in the debate about Jeff Koons' talent, sniffs the Countess du Ruel.  I'm firmly in the "he's a con man" camp.  I've never seen a worse example of phoney, gimmicky art than Koon's first large scale exhibition, the Popeye Series, at the Serpentine, which is running now until mid-September.

Saatchi introduced Koons to Britain a couple of decades ago (in ‘89) in a show of new art from New York.  Since then we've seen Koons' sex pictures (such as the Italian porn star La Cicciolina) and his hoovers sending the contemporary art scene into gushing outbursts of praise, undeserved according to skeptics.  Occasionally we see his works in the windows of the Gagosian. Mostly, we find him in the summer exhibitions, biannuals and up for big art prizes.  From my point of view, I've seen too much of him to last a lifetime.

I ask you: "Is Popeye really an icon for serious creative investigation?" Especially when it comes in the form of children's blow-up swimming aids that we all buy at the beach?  Are kids' toys seriously to be taken as surrealism? And even if they were, who cares? You can take all his pool toys, lobsters, dolphins and turtles, and drown them as far as I am concerned.

One of the features of the show is Popeye Eating his Spinach – surprise! surprise! Who would have guessed? One art critic, Arthur Danto, suggests this is Koons' self portrait. God forbid that anyone should view this as the American spirit...unless it is linked to George Bush. All the talk about the symbolism of Popeye having widespread identity with the American dream is just so much hot air. We've been drawing that kind of comparison ever since the birth of Coca Cola ads. Ho, Hum.

In fact, Koons' toys as art might have all worked in the 60s with the Warhol Baked Beans can. But give me a break...we've seen all this before and more. Even if these childish images are covering up darker adult concerns. Ho, Hum, again.

Who wants to hear Jeff Koons' "State of the Nation" address? Looney Tunes? Looney Koons!
