| “SUNDAY TIMES STYLE” NONSENSE |

Woe, is me! Woe, is me! moans Mrs M. The giant new Style section which arrived with the Sunday papers has depressed me beyond words. It’s fashionista babble and full of the worst uber-trash I’ve ever thumbed through. Has The Sunday Times lost its marbles?I’m sure the newspaper has researched the target demographic, but The Style couldn’t be aimed at anyone over 15. And I actually thought 15 year olds had more sense. (And do 15 year olds buy The Sunday Times?) This is fashion illiteracy at its most irritating. I look through this enormous waste of paper in bewilderment: could this really interest anyone? The double-page Louis Vuitton ad features two thirteen year old girls, hugging pugs, in costumes patterned on the black shirts and caps of the SS. (Ho, hum, we’ve seen this before.) A few pages further along Prada displays two bored young ingenues, clutching snake skin bags, who would have been thrown out of class for their insipid attitudes. Marc Jacobs’ page contributes an ugly pre-teenage girl wearing a hideous grimace and big red rubber gloves. Is this what we want to encourage in the youth of today? What is all this telling us? That our culture so degenerate that to be rich and fashionable is a horrible, grotesque bore, even to teenagers? If so, there may be an moral to The Style story. That at least would be a redeeming quality. Alas, I fear this is simply a fetish for perversity, for its own sake. And there is nothing new on any page. I think that The Sunday Times’ readers deserve the choice about whether to buy into this blast of libertines, bondage, Nazi caps and the ennui of pre-pubescence. We can buy fashion magazines if we want to participate in this ethos. It shouldn’t be thrust upon unsuspecting readers of Sunday papers. The Style’s self-proclaimed ‘sartorial shorthand for sex and danger’ is truly boring. — Mrs M
