I fully intended to write about the ongoing expenses scandal: Will Gordon Brown go? Will there be a general election? Which party is making the most political capital out of the slow motion train crash that is Westminster these days? However, you'll be glad to know that I don't think I can muster it now; a clip of winged and thonged "gay Austrian fashionista Bruno" – Sacha Baron Cohen's latest alter ego – coming crashing down over the rapper Eminem at the star-studded MTV Movie Awards yesterday has wiped all thoughts of expenses from my mind. Ah, finally, something trivial! Just what I needed. It's exactly the kind of comic relief from such a worthy and depressing news story that I was hoping for. You can read about it and see a clip on the Telegraph website or watch it in full.
MP expenses do seem pretty dull and tedious when compared with a joke at the expense of rapper Eminem – a music artist often accused of homophobia. Cohen's new film featuring Bruno comes out in July, and he couldn't have come up with a more audacious way of promoting it – particularly as the film is called "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt." With the wings, thong and bottom directly in Eminem's face he's gone at least one better this time. Right, now back to the expenses, electoral reform, economic crisis etc etc...
