HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR GIFT IS LOVED OR LOATHED

The high street has had a booming couple of days, says Atticus, with sales unlike any we've experienced before. The Great British shopping public is finally back to doing what it does best – propping up the economy. It took a monumental sale to lure us to the shops in these newly frugal times. Father will be getting that bottle of whiskey after all, and Clouseau that luxury bone. But with the sales perhaps tempting us to buy certain gifts we'd normally not look twice at ("the deal's just too good!"), could this be a bumper year for reject presents? And how do you know when your gift has hit wide of the mark? There is one clear way of finding out...

The answer comes from the sitcom Seinfeld, which also furnished the world with the concept of "regifting" – passing on an unwanted gift to another person – something that could very well be happening to your unwanted gifts this year.

To discover if your gift will be cherished or regifted, you just need to pay attention to the response of the receiver when they open the present. If they say the name of the gift out loud then, unfortunately, the gift is a dud. So, when Aunt Ginny opens your present and says "Ah, potpourri" and Grandfather unwraps that whiskey and says "ah, Bells", your gift has not found the happy home you were hoping for it.
