As the first reports come from the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland, we can all breathe easy now we know that we're still here, sighs Atticus. Just like the millennium bug, this much discussed apocalypse failed to materialise, but I'm not bitter.

A beam of particles completed the inaugural lap of the "Big Bang Machine" at 9.28am (UK time) today. The £3.6 billion project hopes to solve a major mystery of the universe today and discover Higgs boson, or "God's particle". It's beyond my limited comprehension of the subject, but sounds pretty important!
