SUPPORTING THE GREAT HAUL OF CHINA

Team GB, as Britain is now named, now has taken the greatest haul of Olympic medals since 1908 – when the Olympics were held in London and we made up about a third of the competitors. As a member of the team, I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself.

It is a staggering state of affairs. Christine Ohuruogu's 400 metres victory was truly breathtaking, and undoubtedly one of the peaks of the entire Games. Whereas a week ago I was simply a disinterested observer of the event, now I feel an intregral part of Team GB.

In reality, I'm not sure how important I've been to the team's success. It has fired me up, though, to start training to compete in 2012. As soon as the Games end in six days or so, and I can tear myself away form the BBC coverage, I'm going to do some research into the sports where age isn't such a hindrance to success.

I don't think I'm going to be any use in the athletics or gymnastics, but there's many an opportunity for the over fifties in "horse based" events. If I start training now I hope I'll be able to continue in the noble British tradition of exceling at the Olympic events that involve sitting down.

Here's hoping you make it, Atticus! Let's hope the horse isn't over-50.
