V&A’S SLOW BOAT TO CHINA

I'm usually a fan of the V&A's exhibitions, but China Design Now really left me wondering what it was all about, writes Mrs. M. My friends and I went along the other day after an excellent lunch at Racine, the French bistro opposite the Brompton Oratory.

I had just watched Ang Lee's film Lust and Caution which is set in Shanghai in the 1940s. The Art Deco sets are stunning and show what masters the Chinese were with modernist ideas. You see wicker and fret work furniture that is elegant and sleek and uniquely oriental. Nothing even remotely inspiring like that was on show in this exhibition.

There are some amusing, brightly coloured neon street lights and neon toys and gadgets, but nothing original or innovative that makes you say, ‘Wow!' Last year's Modernist Show was exciting and gave you an idea of the designs that were being created in Europe, Asia, and American, etc. in the 30s, 40s and 50s. I left the V&A the other day not having learned anything about China or its' designs now. Also, I couldn't find anything I wanted to buy in the shop, except for two postcards.

All and all I was very disappointed.
