That maddening new
magazine, LUXX, has come through the
door slot again with my Saturday Times, complains Mrs. M. I want to scream ‘Do
the Saturday Times editors really think
this is what I want to wake up to?' It
makes me feel ill! Only this morning on the news we hear that oil has gone up
$10 a barrel. We're all worried we won't
be able to afford to drive our vehicles.
And here is this luxury nonsense!
The editor writes, (note the hint of apology,) ‘If it seems odd to be celebrating beautiful things just as the credit crunch turns ugly, so be it.' Really! He further explains the idea of ‘ethical luxury,' which he defines as ‘economising' by getting pearls, gemstones and diamonds at a good price. And he goes on to praise enjoying the best things in life with a clear conscience. This absurd LUXX magazine is
selling advertising to big time luxury brands aimed at the super-rich who are
recession resistant, while hoping not to upset the rank and file Times reader, who are feeling the
hardship of the economic downturn. 99.9%
of women are forsaking designer shops for Oxfam or eBay and cancelling holidays
and struggling to meet bills. They won't
welcome this glorification of excess!
