I went to a book launch tonight at the Jamaican High Commission just off South Ken’s Exhibition Road. Levi Roots, of Dragon’s Den fame, has just released his Reggae Reggae Cookbook, illustrated by my friend. Introduced by Peter Jones (who is impossibly tall) Levi reserved his praise for the two strong women who’d pulled him through adversity, his grandmother and mother, says Atticus.
What is it about strong women? Perhaps it the added adversity that women themselves so often have to face – so that when times are hard, their example is inspirational. Strong people are often so stoical (putting their own needs far down the agenda) that those who depend on them forget (or don’t even recognise) the sacrifices they make. It was nice to see two women’s sacrifices recognised as the achievement they are tonight.
