In 2004 a huge fire raged through an art depot, destroying a number of famous – and infamous – artworks by the Britart pack. As well as Tracy’s tent, the Chapman brothers’ Hell was engulfed by the flames. Now, it’s back – even more hellish than before, says Atticus.
The original consisted of 5,000 miniature model Nazis performing torture and genocide. This one, entitled F****** Hell, features tens of thousands of tiny Nazis and a number of Hitlers, including one at his easel, leisurely painting. The piece is part of a Chapmen show at the White Cube Gallery called 'If Hitler Had Been a Hippy How Happy Would We Be’, which also features 13 watercolours by Adolf Hitler painted over with rainbows and psychedelic colours by the brothers. I’m not sure what I think of the brothers’ work, but I feel almost compelled to see the show, in the same way that we are all drawn to the incomprehensibility of the human condition.
