"London’s Mayor is off to a good start," writes
Countess du Ruel. "Banning alcohol on
buses and the Tube will make those of us with Freedom Passes happy to ride on
public transport again."
This single step will
cut crime and anti-social behaviour. In Europe we don’t feel like we’re risking our lives by
stepping onto a metropolitan bus or sitting in a municipal square. My friend, Monique, says that rowdy drinking
in public has made enjoying open spaces impossible. She was accosted on the King’s Road by a
youth who luckily only tried to scare her. “You’re afraid to make eye contact or confront people who might become
violent or abusive because of drink. Drunken youths have been tyrannizing our city parks and neighbourhood
gardens. You have to think twice before
entering these spaces, when they should be there for everyone to enjoy.” Figures show that violent crime in London has increased by over 13% in the last eight
years.
The Metropolitan
Police, Transport for London, and alcohol charities all support the ban. Visitors and Londoners alike are sick of
encountering booze-fuelled unpleasantness on the city’s buses and tubes. Let’s hope London can once again be the pleasant and
unthreatening city it once was.
